A Jubilee is a special year, named after the yobel (ram’s horn) used to announce it on Yom Kippur. In the Bible, it occurred every 50 years (Leviticus 25:8-13) as a time for renewal, debt forgiveness, land restoration, and rest for the land.Jesus embodied this spirit of liberation, as seen in Luke 4:18-19, quoting Isaiah. The first papal Jubilee was declared in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII. Initially held every 100 years, the interval was later shortened to 25 years, with additional extraordinary Jubilees, such as the 2015 Year of Mercy. Over time, traditions like pilgrimages, the Holy Door, and plenary indulgences have been added.
